The Jewel of Shakti

mimi_miyagiIn the Tantric Goddess worship of ancient India, the clitoris was revered as a symbol of feminine power. The Sanskrit word for clitoris is yonimani, from yoni meaning vagina and mani, which literally means “jewel” but can also symbolically refer to the penis. Female worshipers sought to emulate the size and strength of the Goddess’s yonimani through constant exercise of the clitoris. A woman with a hyper-developed yonimani was referred to as a naugi, or pythoness, and – with an erect length of two inches or more – her penetrative skills were said to equal those of any man.

An example of a modern-day “pythoness” is Mimi Miyagi, pictured above. She is a physically and intellectually empowered female, who at various times has worked as a model, body-builder, actress and politician. She is best known today for her humanitarian work in support of underprivileged children in the Philippines, and for having campaigned to become Governor of Nevada in 2006. But earlier in her career, during the 1990s, she worked briefly in the adult film industry – revealing to the world that she has a truly enormous yonimani. At one point, body-building exercises and  steroid use caused it to grow to an estimated 5 centimetres in length. An empowered woman indeed!

The Chapel of the Vagina

Chapel of the VaginaThe “Chapel of the Vagina”, pictured above, is an art installation that was produced by Polish student Iwona Demko in 2012. This was inspired by the theory that in the distant past, women were dominant over men. In those times, the vagina was respected and worshipped, but this was forgotten when men took over. Iwona’s installation is intended to revive the matriarchal ideas by bringing the vagina back into the sacred realm. The work earned her a Ph.D. degree in 2012. More information can be found at the Vagina Museum.
